For Theia, her waiata is an ode to Hine-Nui-Te-Pō (Great Woman Of The Night) “I’ll weave you in and call you mine” she is our eternal mother and kaitiaki of death and Rarohenga - the underworld. “I am the dark, I am the door, I am the silence after the war” She wanted to expose the demonization she has been faced with by the unrelenting male gaze painting her as malevolent goddess of sex and punishment “My womb is not your story to twist, my name’s a curse upon your lips, my legs are mountains you’ll never shift” Pitting Māui as the hero and Hine-Nui-Te-Pō as the villainous witch. "It is on us to educate about her story, therefore I wanted to exalt her power in this waiata. She is the embodiment and example of our traditional worldview that women are the givers - and the takers of life."
